I store the dirties in a PUL lined stainless can with a lid, set the washer on partial load and a hot cycle, then rinse once, wash once with 1/4 capful ALL (free and clear), rinse again with a sprinkling of tea tree oil, and finally line dry (sometimes a few minutes in the dryer to loosen them up).
I do a quick hand rinse for ALL diapers in cold water, then put them in a dry/wet bag to store until wash day (every third day). I then do a cold rinse, followed by a hot wash with 1/4 cap detergent (just started using Country Save) with extra rinse. I then line dry inside or out with occasional dryer time.
This is what I’m doing lately with my pockets:
Spray with natural ‘stink spray’ for urine, etc. (I use a natural, safe pet one or the BG Brand one), store in a wet bag.
Put on the hot water cycle, add in gentle laundry detergent (like Nature Clean), add oxygen bleach and let it sit, add diapers until hot water covers, then switch to warm. Hang to dry (outside if possible)! The sun is the BEST bleacher and cleaner!
I rinse my diapers, then store in an old plastic portable file box with handle. That is filled with cold water and vinegar. It’s easy for me since the file box stays in the shower stall so I just drop the dirty diapers in there. I wash on the 2nd day with free and clear. Then hang dry.
I wash with half a scoop of Ecos detergent, and then run a whole extra wash cycle with no detergent, just white vinegar in a downy ball. Sometimes I’ll add a squirt of Dawn to the first wash.
I rinse and then toss in my dry pail. On the 2nd day I wash, usually I do a prewash, then soak with baking soda for a while then run a normal wash with 1/2 the free and clear detergent and vinegar in the rinse cycle plus a 2nd rinse. If the weather is obliging I hang to dry.
Our Wash Routine (with the new HE front loader): cold soak/prewash, hot wash with cloth-safe detergent (currently using Planet HE though I don’t love it like some seem to), cold rinse, extra spin, dry everything for 10ish minutes in the dryer or hang dry. Easy as pie! :)
we store in a dry pail and then do a cold rinse/presoak with bac-out, hot wash with homemade laundry soap and a downy ball full of vinegar then a second cold rinse. All covers and pockets are hung to dry (most of the time!!). The bac-out has really helped with rashes and stinkies!
I don’t rinse my diapers. I store them in a dry wet bag in a pail. I soak them in the washing machine for a couple of hours on cold with baking soda. I wash them on hot with kirkland environmentally friendly detergent and rinse with vinegar. I normally dry in the drier, but would like to start hanging them outside.
I’m still working out the kinks in my wash routine. If the diaper is poo-tastic, I try to shake off as much as possible in the toliet and if there are some that want to hang on for the ride I usually just get a little bit of TP and make it go in the toilet. Then those and the pee diapers get tossed in a dry pail until the day comes to throw them in the washer.
I start off with a soak/prewash cycle (which last about 30 minutes). Then, I start them on a normal wash with the smallest amount of detergent (that’s safe for the cloth of course). Sometimes I do an extra rinse and spin cycle after the normal cycle, sometimes I don’t. It all depends on if things are suds-y or not; stinky or not.
Then, if it’s a beautiful day out, they’ll get hung out to dry, if not, then the covers get hung to dry in the laundry room while everything else goes for a ride in the dryer.
I rinse off any solids with a diaper sprayer attachment on our toliet. Then they are stored in a dry pail until wash day. I start off with a cold rinse, a hot wash with 1/4 cup of Charlie’s Soap and another rinse. Then I either line dry (if nice) or wash on low. No stains yet and no stink!!!
Cold wash with no detergent, then a hot wash with an extra rinse. I put the inserts in the dryer and hang the pocket dipes out to dry–no worries about elastic wearing out!
I wash on hot 2 times. Once with country save detergent and once with no detergent. Then I dry, if stains then I line dry.
I’m using all-in-one pockets (BG’s and Happy Heinys). I store them in a waterproof bag. Every other day I pull out the liners and throw them in the washer. I wash on hot with homemade detergent, do an extra rinse, and tumble dry. So far it works great and is super easy! This summer I’ll line dry sometimes too.
I drop everything into my wet bag (rinsed if soiled) and I take the inserts out of my pocket diapers then. I run a cold rinse and then wash on hot and do a second
cold rinse when the wash is done. Then I line dry them (outside if possible).
We keep a covered trash bucket next to the changing table. Every 3rd day, we put on our rubber gloves and spray bac out on them and toss them in the wash. With our front loader, we run a quick cycle with cold water and no soap, then we wash with hot water, high spin, heavy soil. If there are still suds during the rinse cycle, we run another rinse.
We don’t have a routine yet since our baby won’t be here until June, but I’ve done lots (and lots!) of reading on this and I think this is the routine that we’ll go with: wash every other day and with our front loader, we’ll do a cold rinse, hot wash with extra water, and second cold rinse. We plan on line-dry the diapers and fluff them for 15 mins in the dryer.
My routine is: put wet diapers in my Natural Baby Company wet bag, reuse the cover. For dirty ones, I either rinse them in the toilet or if I had a flushable liner in it, I flush it. Then the diaper goes in the bag. When the bag is full or when I feel like it, I wash them with a small amount of regular detergent.
I store poopy diapers in an old plastic file box (like Commenter #4) with cold water and a spoonful of Biz stain remover. Every other day or so, I wash the diapers in Dreft on warm cycle and line dry.
I use a dry pail. Every 3rd day I wash starting with a cold soak then prewash. Then wash on hot with 1/4 cup of Tide. I air dry the covers and use the dryer for the diapers. As soon as it is warm I hope to start line drying the diapers as well.
We use a dry pail and wash every two to three days. I do a cold wash, cold rinse with detergent (still trying to find what works best for us). Sometime I put some vinegar in the downy ball. A hot wash, cold rinse with no detergent unless I think they really need it. Sometimes another hot or warm wash, cold rinse, if I think the detergent isn’t all out. On nice days I line dry everything except hemp. But we live in Michigan so usually just covers get put on the drying rack and rest is dried on low (or medium if there aren’t any pockets in the load).
I run my diapers through a cold rinse cycle, then a Hot was with a 1/4 cap of All Free & Clear. Then an extra hot rinse. I dry my diapers in the dryer for 30 minutes then hang up anything that didn’t dry on hangers in my laundryroom to finish drying.
We live in a two story house, so I have two set-ups: one upstairs and one downstairs. I have a diaper pale with a whammies pale liner for the dirties. We wash every other day and I do a rinse cycle and then a full hot wash cycle. Luckily we live in sunny Florida, so I sum my dipes after almost every wash. I love looking at all of my dipes on the line!
I rinse the poopy diapers by hand in the sink and then place them (with the wet diapers) in the bottom of the diaper genie my sister-in-law gave me (before she knew I was doing clothe diapers). Then every other day I do a load in hot water using bio kleen. Works wonders and I have very few stains!
We dump all the dirty dipes in a wet bag, washing every other day with a cold wash first followed by a very hot wash and extra rinse. Then we hang to dry. works like a charm!
We rinse and soak. Then wash every evening with a free & clear detergent at the moment (but I was thinking about switching to EnviroRite) on cold. We use very little detergent and if there are no suds in the final rinse than I don’t bother to do an extra. Gotta save the earth. Cut back on water.
I rinse all poopy diapers in cold water. Throw everything in a hot wash with one scoop of Charlie’s Soap (the powdered detergent, not liquid) and, sometimes, a drop or two of tea tree oil. Then rinse with cold water. We use a pay-per-use washing machine in our apartment, so we only do additional washes as needed. Then dry on warm heat in the dryer. When it gets *consistently* sunny enough, I am considering drying pocket diaper shells in the sun! =)
My baby will be here in Oct. so I do not have a laundry set up yet but what I would like to do is after rising off dirty diapers put them in a laundry basket and wash them with liquid detergent, baking soada and vinager once a day at night.
I do the dry pail method. I use a water resistant bag that I wash w/ the diapers. I have an HE washer, I prewash w/ baking soda, wash on hot/cold with ALL free and clear HE detergent then add vinigar as fabric softener and finish w/ an extra rinse. I line dry. I do this everyday as my stash is small, but its really no problem.
Store dirty/ wet dipes in lidded pail lined with a Whamies pail liner. Every couple of days I toss in front loader and rinse on short cold cycle with Classic Sun detergent. Then I run a long hot cycle with detergent and Sun Oxygen cleaner – vinegar in rinse on cold. Hang diapers, doublers and covers to dry overnight and fluff in morning on warm. Done! Nice, clean smelling diapers.
I am new to CD so I haven’t really got a routine down yet..I am excited to read all these comments to get ideas..
I store the diapers in a dry pail until wash day (around 17 diapers). I run a cold/cold quick wash, followed by a hot/cold heavy soil wash + stain cycle + extra rinse. (I have a HE front loader) w/ 1 TBsp BioKleen detergent and vinegar in the softener dispenser. I usually have to run a couple rinse cycles to get the soap out. I machine dry on low.
After a diaper change, I just throw the dirty dipe into a doorknob hanging wet bag (ds is ebf still). To wash, I fill the washer as full as I can with cold water, sprinkle in some Country Save (love it), then run a light wash. After the dipes have agitated for a while, I’ll let them soak for at least an hour, then finish out the wash. Next, I fill the washer with hot water and run a super heavy wash with about 2 tsp of Country Save. Rinse with cold. If needed, I’ll run another cold rinse. Weather permitting I’ll line dry everything, if not, I’ll use the dryer for everything except what has pul, those air dry. Whew! sounds like a lot but it’s pretty easy! Thanks for the giveaway!
I’m expecting my 4th child anytime now and this my first experience with cloth diapering. So far I’ve only had to wash clean diapers to prepare them for the little one to come. I bought some Country Save as I’ve heard it’s the best and I plan to wash my soiled diapers with it every other day and machine dry them.
I rinse the dirty diapers in the toilet and put them in a painted kitty litter bucket in my son’s room. Each night when I put my son to bed I dump the diapers in the washer, wash them on cold cycle with 1 cup of homemade laundry detergent. Then I run a hot cycle also with 1 cup of homemade laundry detergent. I dry them on low-heat, and take them out and fold them in the morning before my son wakes up.
We store dirty diapers in a dry pail until wash day…..usually every 2-3 days. I do a cold pre-wash/soak then a hot wash/soak with my homemade detergent, followed by a cold rinse with vinegar. My routine is fairly simple since we just use prefolds. Covers just get thrown in with our regular laundry.
My baby is due Thursday so I’m frantically trying to plan a cloth diapering routine! I plan to do prefolds so I’ll probably soak them in a bucket until wash day. Soak in what? Good question!
I wash every second day, I started using planet, although I was using Arm and Hammer Essentials free and clear before that and it worked just fine too, its just that no one within 100 miles carries it. Darnit! I basically use about a half of the first line measure for the first cold/cold wash, then same for a hot/cold wash and a rinse. I think we need a new washer, as it was taking forever to rinse, but we moved to a new place and for them, with one rinse, it all came out, and no bubbles! so I’m thrilled. But I would love an even better detergent! The water is different, too, so it’s hard to tell what the culprit was! The dryer we’re using isn’t as good as our old one, but again, it all just takes time to work itself out I guess.
i wash every other day. i could go longer but i really enjoy washing, stuffing, folding and stacking diapers on my changing table. i do a cold prewash with no soap, then a hot wash with one pump of charlies liquid soap, cold rinse then a hot rinse. sometimes an extra rinse. then line dry or machine dry, depending on the weather or how hectic my day is.
I do not have a wet bag :( So I rinse and toss in the washer (HE front loader) Until wash day, every 2-3 days. They get a cold rinse and spin. Then they get a hot wash, cold rinse with an extra rinse and All free and clear detergent. I am still trying to find a detergent I love. Then they go in the dryer. I have not had nice enough weather to put them outside yet.
My 3 yo ds wears AIOs only at night, so if wet, I remove extra insert, rinse everything in water, and toss in the front loader until they are all dirty. Then once per week I run a cold soak, a long hot wash w/ detergent, then an extra rinse. I just bought some RLR to try since we have such hard water. My ds#2 is due in a few weeks, so this will all change!
We do a prewash cycle on cold with 1/2 the recommended Purex F&C then a regular cycle on Hot/Cold (no detergent). Then we throw in the dryer on medium. Pretty simple!
My grandchild is due in about 6 months so we don’t have a routine yet but we are getting really good ideas from the posts. We plan to use a plastic pail/with lid and let diapers sit in vinegar water and wash every other day. Then into the dryer.
We have prefolds with flushable liners, we flush liner with poo down toilet, sometimes a quick rinse in the sink is needed. Throw into the pail (with lid) by the washer. Once a week wash on hot with Charlie’s Soap, no extra rinsing or soaking needed. Dry on medium. No smells, rarely a stain.
I was just wondering what bac-out is and what homemade etergeant recipes the ladies might be using. I have been using the same routine and products for the past 2 1/2 years (and it has been fine) but have a new baby due in July and thought I might want to improve if needed. Thanks!
