After a few weeks of using cloth diapers, it became clear the washing process would be easier if I purchased and used cloth wipes. I kept forgetting to throw the disposable wipes away – tossing them into the diaper pail along with the cloth diapers instead.
It’s hardly enjoyable to pick pieces of disposable baby wipes out of the Velcro tabs on my bumGenius 3.0′s…I had better things to do!
Admittedly, before I began using cloth diapers I thought cloth baby wipes were a little over the top, but it became obvious they are an invaluable time saver!
I did a lot of looking around before I bought wipes.
My main priority was cost; while I fully realize some of the best deals cost more up front (hence why I cloth diaper), I checked prices on cloth wipes for the more popular brands, like Kissaluvs, Thirsties, and bumGenius, and was a little taken aback by the cost.
I had read these were well worth the cost, but…“Oh, the cost!” I considered just using baby wash cloths, but even the price of those were unreasonable to me. I turned to my old reliable resource, Ebay. I searched for deals on the main brands before purchasing (2) packs of twelve “non-name-brand” flannel wipes. These have held up fabulously to repeated abuse, remain bright white with very little staining, and are still soft. Best of all, they cost less than $1 each (including shipping)! The store I purchased them from no longer sell cloth baby wipes, but that isn’t the point…the point is if you dig around, eBay is a great resource for cloth wipes.
Baby Wipe Solutions
After making a decision on cloth baby wipes, I researched cloth baby wipe solutions. I found several nifty recipes I had every intention of trying, but because I didn’t have all the ingredients on hand for most of them, I started with plain water. When water worked without permanently (so far) injuring my baby, I lost interest in trying any of the solutions. That said, I suspect my lazy “wet the wipe when you use it” method is probably taking more time than using a solution and presoaking the cloth baby wipes. I would love some input on this – otherwise, I’ll stick with the same thing I’ve been doing!
I heart Cloth Baby Wipes
Cloth baby wipes have only served to deepen my love for cloth diapers. Cloth wipes make using cloth diapers even easier – which I did not think was possible; they also save me even more money every month!
Now to figure out how to keep myself from throwing the occasional disposable wipe I bum from a friend into the diaper pail…it still is not a welcome surprise in my laundry load!

When we were preparing for the arrival of our twins, my oh-so-crafty mom greeted our “expecting” announcement with “what can I make them?”. Committed to cloth diapers, cloth wipes seemed like a no-brainer. I tasked my mom with the project, since I lack the sewing gene. She made 75 cloth wipes, they are 6×7 inches, flannel on one side and terrycloth on the other. It took her about 6 hours total measuring, cutting, sewing. The wipes are so handy, with a soft side and a scrubby side for those hefty cleanups. All told it was about $12 worth of fabric. We use a water/castille soap/olive oil solution (2T each of those to 16 oz water) which we keep in a spray bottle on the changing table. Since we switched to cloth pretty much after the meconium passed, it’s been routine for us.
Since I don’t know much about cloth wipes, I’m learning here too. :)
Great post.
We just wet as we go, I just don’t have the extra time to make solution and when plain water works why bother with anything else. Sometimes we do end up with some residual smell, but not very often.
We wet as we go – we keep a mixed bottle of wipe solution in the diaper bag, and a foaming bottle for at home (and the solution is only because we won a whole batch of it somewhere along the way, so we might as well use it).
We figure it’s easier to contain the mess this way, and wet wipes aren’t accidentally left in the diaper bag to go icky.
I’ve always wanted to use them but keep picking up disposables from others. So far no out of pocket expense but I am looking into them. Sewing sounds fun, I like to sew!!!
I love our bum genius cloth wipes, they are so soft and durable. We also bought a warmies cloth wipes warmer because she looooves it – and we carry a spray bottle in the diaper bag. The warmies wipes fell apart, so that was a failed experiment, but the BGs have held up and my baby has the happiest tush in the world!
We use cloth wipes most of the time, too! I also paled at the cost of name-brand ones, but I wanted to try it so bad, I just went to the baby resale shop and bought a bunch of ugly receiving blankets for 50 cents a piece and cut them up into 4×5 squares. Yeah, they fray a little in the wash, but you could serge them if you know someone with a serger.
Oddly enough, for traveling we do use disposable wipes, I use the Meijer brand and they wash and dry ONCE just fine. I can either thrown them out then, reuse them (and they disintegrate in the wash the second time) or I use them for the last wipe, which is usually just to get rid of any residue, and throw them in the trash.
We used to use castille soap, EVOO and tea tree oil, but have switched to just water and it works just fine! If she’s a little rashy, I wash with soap and water right at the changing table and dry with a towel before rediapering.
My mother-in-law made my daughter and niece blankets, burp cloths, towels, etc. when I was pregnant and in the first couple of weeks of my daughter’s life. I asked her to use the scraps to make cloth wipes and she made me a little over 20 wipes from the towel scraps. In the first few days after my daughter was born we used disposable diapers and wipes and she got a horrible diaper rash. Since switching to the cloth wipes and using plain old water we haven’t had any problems. Even when we travel and use disposable diapers, I bring the cloth wipes.
I got a Bottoms-Up Baby wipes kit to review on my blog a while back and I’m SO glad I did. They’re just like little white washcloths. You just use water with a drop or two of essential oil (if you want.) I have been keeping them in a hand-me-down wipes warmer someone gave me, since the weather’s really cold here right now and our house is kinda chilly. So far (a couple months in) they wash up really well. I just use the same 25 over and over and wash them every other day with my cloth diapers. Love them!
Here’s the review I did, FYI.

Hope this helps in some way!
I just use old wash cloths and get them wet in the bathroom sink before a diaper change (it is right across from DS’s room, so it takes about 10 seconds). I’ve also tried those little cheap baby washcloths but I prefer the regular ones. I tried a squeeze bottle (both w/ plain water and one of those homemade wipe solutions) but I kept dripping on the carpet so decided to just use a sink. Way easier. I love, love, love cloth wipes and can’t stand disposable ones. They stink, you need to use a lot of them for messy jobs, and then you have to dispose of them in a different pail. What a pain.
I now have my 3 year old getting the wipes wet for me…It’s no longer lazy for me. It’s character building for her! =)
That, and she feels involved…
When preparing my diaper stash before my little guy was born, I saw some Wahmies baby wipes made from old t-shirts and I thought surely I could do that since my husband has old t-shirts I’d just love to chop to bits. So we did. And they work great. I had the edges sew down by a friend, they don’t look cool or anything, but they’re wiping a bottom–I don’t think “cool-looking wipes” really matters.
We wet as we go with plain water, too. I put a drop or two of tea tree oil in the spray bottle every so often just to make sure it stays free of ickies, but eventually that clogs up the squirter, so I don’t do it much.
We use only water. We used to wet them as we needed them, but I started wetting a handful at a time and put them in a pencil case that we keep with the diapers. It’s a plastic case that looks like a wipe holder only bigger. It works great and saves time. For wipes we bought a 40 pack of microfiber cleaning cloths at Costco for $10. I cut 10 of them into 40 wipes. They don’t even fray. I also use them for inserts and doublers (not doublers that touch baby’s skin) and used them to wipe up spit-up in the beginning when there was lots of it. You’re not supposed to use microfiber directly against baby’s skin in a diaper, but for wipes it works great, since they aren’t really sitting there against baby’s skin. It’s easy to wipe up even the stickiest poops and they haven’t irritated by daughter’s bottom at all.
wet wipes commonly use to clean up the diaper area when you are changing a baby.It refresh baby skin.

Excellent read! I have one particular recommendation for your webpage. It appears like there are a few style sheet troubles when opening a number of webpages in google chrome and safari. It is functioning good in internet explorer. Probably you could double check that. I’ve just book-marked this content on delicious.com to acquire a few more readers to your site.
