With all the choices available in cloth diapering, it can be a bit confusing, perhaps even overwhelming when you are first tackling the job of stocking up for your little one.
Before making your selection, you first need to recognize the difference between the types of cloth diapers and how each type of cloth diaper fits your baby’s needs.
Here we’ll outline the difference between prefolds, fitted diapers and all-in-ones.
Prefold diapers
Prefold Diapers, also referred to as Chinese Prefolds and Diaper Service Quality (DSQ) prefolds, are the older style diapers that your mother or grandmother may remember. Prefold diapers are rectangle in shape and have three layers sewn down the center for extra absorbency. They are called prefold in contrast to the large, square diapers that came before them (flats), which required folding to put the absorbent layers where the baby needed them.
Prefolds have the absorbent layers sewn in place and require only a short lesson in the art of cloth diaper folding. A 4 x 8 x 4 prefold diaper has 4 layers on the outer panels at the sides and 8 layers sewn down the middle panel.
Prefold diapers require a waterproof diaper cover.
Contour Diapers
Contour diapers are hour-glass shaped, with wings in the back that wrap around the hips to the front. They simply lay in a wrap style cover. Some contour diapers can also be fastened with either Dritz diaper pins or a Snappi diaper fastener to hold the diaper in place.
Contour diapers require a waterproof diaper cover.
Fitted Diapers
Fitted diapers are also contoured to fit your baby. Fitted diapers have elastic around the waist and legs for a snug fit, and most fitted diapers have a snap or hook-and-loop closure.
Fitted diapers require a waterproof diaper cover.
All-In-One diapers
All-In-One diapers (AIO) take the two-part equation of fitted diapers and a waterproof diaper cover and put them together in one diaper. All in one cloth diapers have a snap or hook-and-loop closure.
This type of cloth diaper is the easiest to use if you are familiar with disposable diapers. They are often called modern cloth diapers for their ease of use and ease of care.
