And now, for today’s Cloth Diaper Tip

With the economy as it is many families are looking for cheaper cloth diapering methods, but want something with the simplicity of All In One Diapers. Easy enough! You can create this same level of simplicity with just a bit of post-laundry preparation with simple prefold diapers and cloth diaper wraps.

AIOs are convenient because parents or caregivers can simply grab them and go – without gathering up a cloth diaper, diaper pins, snappi fastener, diaper cover, etc…., right? With a little bit of pre-planning, and a few extra less expensive cloth diaper wraps, you can give yourself the same convenience.

All you need to do is pre-line your diaper covers with prefold diapers straight from the washer and dryer (or line), getting them ready for a quick grab, quick trip, quick diaper change, or for that babysitter or grandparent watching your baby.

Think about it…

Even if you had to purchase one cloth diaper wrap for each of your prefold diapers (which you don’t – the ratio is more like 1 to 3) is still less than the cost of stocking up your cloth diaper stash with All In Ones or Pocket Diapers.

Prefold diapers offer more absorbency right where it’s needed, and because prefolds aren’t permanently sewn between two layers (one being waterproof), it is argued they can be washed more thoroughly.

We think our Diaper Rite™ Prefold Diapers at Diaper Junction are thicker, softer and more absorbent than the prefolds you can find in your local baby superstore, not only that, but they are cut to fit your cloth diaper wrap perfectly without additional folding down in the front or back.

Prefold diapers laid inside cloth diaper wraps, you will find, are the most economical choice for cloth diapering, especially since they have more than one use; a diaper, a lap pad or burp cloth, a doubler, a pocket diaper insert, and later – when they are worn thin and ragged – you can recycle them as cleaning rags, dust rags, or tossed out in the garage scraps for drying off a freshly washed car.

  1. I did this for awhile and I really did like it. I think if you had the proper supplies it would work great! I had some less than stellar prefolds and it was hit or miss how much I liked it at each change…But thanks for showing how it CAN be done, and cheaply!

  2. I really liked prefolds for a newborn, but with a squiggler it just didn’t hold up for me, so we invested in pockets, although if we have another baby, we will go back to prefolds as well.

  3. I regularly use prefolds and wraps at home, and it’s fine here. My girl is wiggly, too, and that’s why when we’re out, I do use pocket diapers. It’s just faster, and I don’t worry about her pulling the prefold out of the wrap, like she does at home if I’m not fast enough!

  4. It is true that different diapers fit differently on different babies – *der* – but I have to admit I was really partial to prefolds and bummis Whisper Pants (no, I wasn’t afraid of diaper pins) when I had my first cloth diapered child.

I even angel folded those prefolds and had them ready – though they weren’t tucked into a wrap.

  6. I really love my prefolds and Thirsties covers. I have a couple of pockets and AIO’s but really don’t find them that much more convenient that my prefolds. Maybe because I never take the time to pre-stuff the pockets! I don’t use pins or snappies, just lay the prefold in the wrap, velcro her up, and we’re done. DD’s pretty squirmy but so far it hasn’t been a hassle at all. I have 24 prefolds and 6 covers, which came to just over $100- you can’t beat that!

  7. I love my diaper rite prefolds! My wriggler likes to eat them… it makes for a very interesting changing table experience! (She actually has two prefolds dedicated for chewing while I change her bottom… that seems to keep her distracted-ish)
We have several covers and like them all for different occasions. But for under tights, leggings, and pants with little give (like cords), we love our Bumkins!

  8. I tried this route and was wondering how everyone prevents the prefold from bunching between the legs? For poop this is not a problem. For pee I find it ends up leaking when I use any of my covers (pro-wrap, bummis, thirsty)

  9. I have trouble with the poop leaking out if I just lay the prefold in a wrap without a snappi…to prevent leaking I have found that laying the prefold flat so the back lines up with the top of the back of the cover(thirsties are my choice), fold the front of the prefold up about 2″, then bring into the middle just the front sides of the prefold(it looks more like a disposable folded this way and kind of narrows the diaper between the legs), place baby on diaper then use snappi to fasten the front to the two “wings” and fasten cover…I haven’t had one leak(poop or pee) since I started folding this way…hope this helps!

  10. We started using prefolds from our local baby store with covers and pocket diapers. I bought my one sizes pockets from a Wham w/out inserts to save money. My store brand prefolds are destroyed now without using them 100% of the time.

While I love prefolds, I do agree that getting the easily attained ones from baby superstores or department stores is a mistake. Spend a few extra bucks and get them online, or get quality ones that have been gently used. We are currently replacing all our shredded prefolds with new ones from a local cloth diaper store. We’re getting Little Lion prefolds which come in a number of sizes and are available online. I’m knitting up wool diaper covers myself to use as covers this time, as I don’t care for the pocket diapers as much as I thought I would.

  11. Cloth diapers become more and more popular. One reason – people are concerned about the environmental impact, another – effect on the baby’s skin.

  12. I have 5 diaper rite prefolds and 1 flips prefold(which is actually a great prefold), and a couple covers, but honestly those are my last resort/emergency dipes. I use gro baby and some fitteds w/ covers and some AIO’s …..a little bit of everything!! But everyone has their favs! I wish I loved the prefolds, it would have saved some $$!

  13. Hi from México! Most comments are on pre-forlds. I will be a grandma soon & want to get bamboo pocket napies that I had planed to make but at the prices of the materials involved I ask:Is it worth it? I´ve found some that seem of good quality can cost as low as $7+sh&h so it seems cheaper to buy than to make but there are so many different brands so it´s hard to choose. Any suggestions? Make or buy? Brands?
    Thanks a lot
