  1. I have only used synthetic, and after 10 months. . ( I can’t believe she’s that old) I desperately want to try cotton and preferably organic. I am coming to you after two solid hours of researching diapers on-line. My hope is that gro-baby is the answer I’m looking for. Open to suggestions.

  2. I do prefer cotton. I use synthetic as well, because after all it is WAY better than disposable. But really cotton is more nayural and I like that.

  3. i haven’t tried either and want to get on board with cloth diapers- so free ones would help me get on board faster :)

  4. Cotton is more breathable! So I like the idea of cotton because it is more natural, especially organic cotton. However, currently I am using both cotton and microfiber/synthetic. Cotton is one of the most comfortable fabrics and washes well, probably why we all have a favorite old, comfy, cotton T-shirt; right?

  5. I use both, but definitely prefer the cotton. I think my daughter would prefer the cotton all of the time, as well.

  6. I use cotton and synthetic, but prefer the cotton for the natural fibers and it being breathable.

  7. I like the idea of cotton better, but I use both.

    Comment # 7 | Posted by Teri | April 17, 2009, 7:01 am
  8. We use both. I like the natural fibers because, well, it’s natural. And more breathable. Organic is even better. But the synthetic stuff does such a great job of wicking the moisture away. It’s hard to knock it too much!

    Comment # 8 | Posted by Cristina | April 17, 2009, 7:20 am
  9. I prefer cotton because I feel like it is more natural and more breathable, and because I have an easier time keeping the stink away. We use cotton during the day, but synthetics at night and during outings because they last longer.

  10. We’re expecting our first in a few weeks, and I currently have a mix of both. I’d love to do all cotton organic, but it gets a little pricey, so I’m hoping that we can get away with a mix of both.

  11. I have a one month old baby, and so far I have only used synthetic pocket diapers and some hemp inserts. I’d love to try cotton and need to add to my stash so I don’t have to wash every single day!

  12. I use homemade prefolds and pockets made from old recieving blankets. I’d love to try some organic cotton and see the difference.

  13. I am pretty new to cloth diapering, so I have only used synthetic so far (fleece & PUL pocket dipes). Though I do love my cotton inserts. They are soft, fluffy, and absorb a ton while still coming out clean after a simple wash.

  14. Hi! I want to say first, that the image you made with the winner’s info is awesome!
Secondly, I’m bummed that I didn’t make it into last week’s contest, we went out of town for Easter and were driving. Finally, I’m excited to enter this week, because these diapers have been the buzz of the blog-o-sphere lately! I PREFER to use cotton or organic/natural materials but so far can’t resist the convenience of fleece and PUL for covers. To me, wool is not something I want to venture into, so there really wasn’t an option for natural waterproofness. I use a lot of prefolds but love my pockets and AIOs too! I’m currently 11 1/2 weeks pregnant & building my babe’s stash!

    Comment # 14 | Posted by Stephanie G. | April 17, 2009, 8:13 am
  15. I use mostly synthetic, since I finally found a daycare that will be green enough to cloth diaper for me, I wanted to make it easy with AIO’s for them! Whoohoo for CD Friendly Daycares!

    Comment # 15 | Posted by Kristin G. | April 17, 2009, 8:33 am
  16. I currently use cotton Chinese prefolds and really like them for their absorbency. I haven’t tried synthetics yet, but am considering getting some liners to help with the dampness on my baby’s skin.

    Comment # 16 | Posted by Jennifer | April 17, 2009, 8:41 am
  17. To be completely honest, I haven’t thought about the organic versus synthetic question before. Since I only know one other person who used cloth diapers (and that was 6 years ago)I didn’t have much to go on besides trial and error. I knew I wanted to use cloth, but didn’t really know where to start. I guess I ended up with diaper covers by accident. I am certainly interested in the organic option, though, because I only want the best for my daughter.

  18. I am stash building in advance for a baby yet to come. What I have so far is cotton with PUL.

    Comment # 18 | Posted by Jane | April 17, 2009, 9:09 am
  19. My baby is due next week on Thursday, so I don’t know yet! I’ve gotten a stash built up of both cotton and synthetic. I like the idea of natural fabrics better though.

    Comment # 19 | Posted by Ellen | April 17, 2009, 9:48 am
  20. I prefer cotton over synthetic for MANY reasons, some being, cotton has better breathe-ability than most synthetics, my baby has a sensitive bum and gets diaper rash really easy.

I use cotton prefolds during the day and bamboo fitteds at night.

    Comment # 20 | Posted by Rachel | April 17, 2009, 9:54 am
  21. I really like cotton, but can’t seem to find many pocket diapers with cotton. The synthetics are okay since I love Fuzzi Bunz!

    Comment # 21 | Posted by Kim | April 17, 2009, 10:16 am
  22. I totally prefer cotton. Its so much softer and is just so naturally absorbent! I really like plain old cotton prefolds. But GroBaby just may be able to convert me into an AIO user :-) Besides Im currently looking for a good summertime diaper since we live in HOT Arizona!

    Comment # 22 | Posted by Arika | April 17, 2009, 10:34 am
  23. I greatly prefer cotton, organic if at all possible. I will not put myself or my son in synthetic fibers at all. Cotton is so much more comfortable and we have sensitive skin in my house.

    Comment # 23 | Posted by Elizabeth | April 17, 2009, 10:44 am
  24. I am getting our first cloth diaper in the mail today. I have a 6 month old, and I am pregnant with my third. I am so excited to start using cloth diapers. I have ordered some cotton and some synthetic. I am trying to figure out what will work best for my family.

  25. We have both types for the moment, and a baby yet to come - I think I prefer the cotton - but I will have a better idea in some weeks about the issue:)

    Comment # 25 | Posted by Mel. | April 17, 2009, 11:28 am
  26. We’re using regular cotton, and plan to switch to BG OS once our son is a little bigger. I like that the synthetics keep him dry, but like that the cotton is a natural fiber. I’m torn!

    Comment # 26 | Posted by Sarah Jo | April 17, 2009, 11:42 am
  27. I use both cotton and synthetic diapers. I find that each baby has different skin issues, so I try to find what works best for that child. I do prefer cotton on newborns and I’m due in about three months with our 6th child. I love those tiny little diapers and its fun to grow a newborn stash. I do prefer synthetic for older babies and toddlers. They seem to repel stains better.

    Comment # 27 | Posted by Grace Burnette | April 17, 2009, 11:44 am
  28. I must say I like synthetic because it absorbs better and keeps his skin drier, and is convenient. I do plan on starting his old prefolds as inserts now, however.

    Comment # 28 | Posted by Andrea | April 17, 2009, 12:23 pm
  29. I would love to use organic, but it does seem that they are always more expensive. So for know I just use the regular chemically treated cottons.

    Comment # 29 | Posted by Rachel | April 17, 2009, 1:39 pm
  30. I have cloth diapered for almost 5 months and I must say that the synthetic inserts were favorites… until I discovered that our hard water was causing big time build up. So from here on out I think we’re going with cotton!

    Comment # 30 | Posted by Heather | April 17, 2009, 1:43 pm
  31. We use both and although I like the idea of cotton much better and would LOVE to go organic, I think we like them both equally well. Still looking for a night time solution.

    Comment # 31 | Posted by Heidi | April 17, 2009, 2:47 pm
  32. I don’t have any cotton diapers! We like the synthetics that we have, but haven’t had to go through the summer yet. Dunno if breathability is going to be an issue.

    Comment # 32 | Posted by Anitra Smith | April 17, 2009, 3:22 pm
  33. I use both, but prefer cotton up against my baby’s sensitive skin. The convient waterproofness - is that a word?- of synthetic covers is nice too. I guess I see value in both.

    Comment # 33 | Posted by melanie lloyd | April 17, 2009, 4:39 pm
  34. I use and like both some. I like that cotton lets the baby feel the wettness so that they know that they have gone. We use EC so I want the child to know they have wet themselves. I have used synthetics in the past and like those for long car trips so that the baby doesn’t have to sit in the wettness.

    Comment # 34 | Posted by Jessi | April 17, 2009, 5:21 pm
  35. I have been using cotton prefolds with a variety of different covers since my son Colden was born in December. We always use wool covers at night and they are awesome. During the day we usually use Imse vimse covers which are a blend of cotton and synthetic. He has never had diaper rash. I would not feel good about using a synthetic liner/diaper…and why would I with such great natural options!

    Comment # 35 | Posted by jennifer | April 17, 2009, 6:47 pm
  36. I have been using both cotton and synthetic and honestly like them both. I think they are both good for different reasons. I would love to be able to go completely organic, but the cost is just too overwhelming so I guess we stick with what we have!

    Comment # 36 | Posted by Katy haderthauer | April 17, 2009, 6:59 pm
  37. I like cotton. It is softer and feels soo good. I do not like synthetics but sometimes you just have no choice. When given a choice I prefer nature made.

    Comment # 37 | Posted by Patti | April 17, 2009, 7:12 pm
  38. I just started cloth diapering. I like it better than synthetic because it doesn’t stink as bad and is better for the environment. I would rather use organic if it weren’t so expensive and me so poor! The only good thing about disposable synthetic diapers is that my baby will sleep 8 hrs at night with them. She is not used to being wet with cloth diapers.

    Comment # 38 | Posted by Jenny | April 17, 2009, 7:14 pm
  39. I think we use synthetic but now that I read this I might be changing our minds!

  42. Cotton feels much better than synthetics….so my vote is COTTON

    Comment # 42 | Posted by Heather | April 17, 2009, 8:12 pm
  43. I definitely prefer cotton. It seems like such a gentle choice, especially for a baby’s sensitive skin. Our family tries to buy cotton as much as possible. Organic cotton is even better.

  44. I have some synthetic diapers (prefold and flat) and plan to gradually get a few cotton diapers for my first grandchild that we are expecting in October. However I would also like to try some organic.

    Comment # 44 | Posted by Karen | April 17, 2009, 8:50 pm
  45. I use all cotton prefolds and flats. I enjoy the ease of my wash routine compared to others I have heard of that use synthetics. I would love to use organic cotton, but just can’t afford it right now.

  46. I’m trying to convince my husband to let me try cloth diapering, and this seems like the best way! The groBaby system looks great!

  47. I love cotton! So soft and gentle on my little baby’s bottom.

    Comment # 47 | Posted by Amber | April 18, 2009, 1:03 am
  48. I have only used cotton. The organic cotton is amazingly softer. It just seems right to use the most natural product available for a new baby.

    Comment # 48 | Posted by Jamie | April 18, 2009, 6:00 am
  49. I have been mainly using cotton Indian prefolds on my four month old since she was born. I have a few synthetics for going out, but I very much prefer the cotton! Its so soft and much easier to tell when the baby is wet. I would love to try organic cotton too, but haven’t yet because its so pricey.

  50. I am a father to a wonderful 2 year old daughter and triplets(2 girls and 1 boy) that will be five months on the 24th. My income is not enough to provide for my family of six. We have been using cloth diapers from the start, and saved the disposibles for emergencies only. We have accumulated 9 cloth diapers and anyone that does cloth knows that is not much when it is divided by 3, we are washing all day in order to have one ready for the next change. It is really hard. If anyone would be able to let go of a few diapers and send our way, it would be greatly appreciated (used is fine). They all wear a size medium, although our little boy may do better in a large. I can be e-mailed at scruz@usa.com for additional contact information. Thank You. Sebastian

  51. I prefer the ease of synthetic and the absorbency of microfiber for everyday, but I prefer organic cotton for when my little guy has “teething-induced” red bum diaper rash.

    Comment # 51 | Posted by Shaina | April 18, 2009, 1:39 pm
  52. I prefer cotton….it seems more comfortable for my baby & the synthetic seems more prone to retaining odors.

    Comment # 52 | Posted by Denise | April 18, 2009, 5:05 pm
  53. I have not yet had the opportunity to try cotton. My daughter will be 4 months old next week and we have only been cloth diapering for the last month.

    Comment # 53 | Posted by Zoe B | April 18, 2009, 7:21 pm
  54. I usually prefer cotton, but when it comes to cloth diapers, I prefer the microfiber because it is the trimmest and most absorbent. I would love to try this diaper!

  55. I’ve been cloth diapering my almost 4 month old baby since day 1 and we love it! I’ll take cloth any way I can get it! I’m going to put some money away to get some bamboo diapers for my little guy and I also wanted to get some hemp stuffins to put in my pockets for night time diapering.

    Comment # 55 | Posted by Kemi | April 18, 2009, 8:00 pm
  56. I honestly don’t care either way. I cloth diaper for economic reasons first, followed by environment. I just want something that will keep her clothes dry, so organic or synthetic don’t matter to me, as long as it doesn’t give her diaper rash.

    Comment # 56 | Posted by becca | April 18, 2009, 9:27 pm
  57. I am a soon to be mother and am very interested in cloth diapering. Since I have never done it before I really don’t have a preference either way. My main reason for cloth diapering is economic reasons and environmental reasons.

    Comment # 57 | Posted by Tina | April 18, 2009, 9:57 pm
  58. I thought I would love the cotton because it is natural, soft and absorbent. After I invested a fortune in cotton diapers, my daughter turned out to be a heavy wetter, and cotton is not as absorbent as claimed. There are far better fibers to soak up the wet, and keep her skin dry. Her skin would get very irritated quickly when she wet her diaper becasue the cotton basically holds the moisture against her skin. Synthetics, especially fleeces and hemps work amazingly well at keeping her skin dry and they hold more fluid.

    Comment # 58 | Posted by Rachel Smith | April 19, 2009, 2:36 pm
  59. We use both but have mostly cotton prefolds with fleece liners to help keep our little one feeling dry. We do have some pocket diapers too and I love them to go out as they are so easy to change and the microfiber and hemp inserts do sucj a great job! The microfleece seems to need to be stripped more often to me though and the hemp do not dry well on the line so I love to use them but I love to wash the cotton!

    Comment # 59 | Posted by Kari | April 19, 2009, 9:43 pm
  60. Hi, I imagine that cotton breaths better but synthetic sure wicks well and dries faster. I don’t think my baby cares. He looks great in either! christinamariasteed@hotmail.com

    Comment # 60 | Posted by Christina | April 20, 2009, 4:44 am
  61. I prefer cotton because my DS has super sensitive skin (one of the reasons we ended up back in cloth!) and the cotton seems to help him out the most.

    Comment # 61 | Posted by Gina | April 20, 2009, 6:26 am
  62. I absolutely prefer natural fabrics over synthetic. (although we have pockets with fleece inners too) We use mostly organic cotton or bamboo velour since my little man has sensitive skin. Hemp is our preferred material for inserts in our pocket diapers. Natural fibers mean no diaper rashes for us!

  63. I actually don’t know…I am pregnant with my 3rd child and so far have only used disposable. I’m planning on changing that this time around and just found your blog while researching cloth diapers.

  66. I use both cotton and synthetic. There are advantages and disadvantages to both. I think at this point I would have to say I like the synthetic better because it helps keep my little one drier.

    Comment # 66 | Posted by Carrie | April 20, 2009, 8:17 pm
  67. I think there are definite advantages to both. I like that the synthetic fabrics are available to keep the baby drier, but there is nothing like cotton for breathability. What I really love is bamboo though! Its natural, very absorbant, and the velour is oh so squishy!

    Comment # 67 | Posted by Jennie Ackerman | April 20, 2009, 8:59 pm
  68. For us, the cotton has worked better than the synthetic, but we’re open to trying either with baby #2 since every baby’s different :)

  69. I am new to cloth diapering and while I like cotton best (for it’s comfort and breathability), I have really come to appreciate a combination of both. Microfiber inserts have become our friend since they seem to keep the baby drier! Best of both worlds.

  73. I will say i absolutely love cotton and so does my little girl, she has very sensitive skin and when i used synthetic she would get a rash and i think it had to do with the fact that it wasnt breathable and soft.

  74. I’ve tried both cotton and synthetics and so far my sensitive baby only stays rash free from gdiapers / sposies, but I’m still trying various diapers and washing routines to see if anything else works.

    Comment # 74 | Posted by Nina | April 21, 2009, 1:20 pm
  75. My baby has sensitive skin, so I prefer cotton. We’ve just started using gdiapers, and we’re just “getting our feet wet” with cloth diapers. I’m interested in giving cloth a shot, but my husband thinks it’d be too much work. I’ve heard the Gro Baby system is easy and would love to try it out.

    Comment # 75 | Posted by Mandy | April 21, 2009, 3:18 pm
  76. I prefer cotton over synthetic because it’s more natural and breathable. That said though, I would take any cloth diaper over disposables. So far, I haven’t noticed any difference as far as how my kids tolerate them. I currently have two kids in diapers and think that the Gro Baby diaper system would make diapering much less complicated in our household.

    Comment # 76 | Posted by Megan | April 21, 2009, 3:25 pm
  77. We prefer organic over synthetic b/c my youngest son has severe skin issues that require only the most “innocuous” materials touch his sweet little hiney. We used disposables for months before realizing the exact problem, and within days of the switch to organic Swaddlebees, his tush is soft and clear…just like a baby’s bottom SHOULD be!!!

  80. I prefer synthetic for its moisture-wicking abilities, but in an ideal world I’d use natural fibers only knowing that they would break down sooner in the environment.

  81. I have 3 children, the youngest being 6 months old and also the only one to have been in cloth diapers. I Love cloth diapering and want to try it all! I’ve used BG’s, HH’s and Hemp prefolds. I’d love to try some organic cotton also. It makes me feel good to know that I am doing everything I can to help the enviornment!

  82. We prefer cotton (organic if possible) because it is more breathable than synthetic fibers and we also prefer to avoid chemicals where we can!

    Comment # 82 | Posted by Carrie | April 22, 2009, 10:03 am
  83. I always prefer organic to synthetic or even non organic. Organic is sustainble and compostable, also chemical free. Synthetic has chemicals and is not biodegradable. Organic is clearly a better choice for healthy babies and a healthy planet.

  84. I’ve used both and I like them both. I like that fleece lined ones have the stay-dry feeling. I think cotton is super absorbant and I like that it is a bit more “green.”

  85. I have gone back and forth about which I like better- for us, the microfiber seems to hold a lot more, but the smell can be bad after awhile, the hemp stuffers I have are stiffer, and seem to be bulkier.

  86. My firstborn was disposable-diapered (that’s probably a made-up word). I’m switching to cloth for my second one due in June. Since we’re switching to cloth anyway, I’d prefer to do natural fibers than synthetic

  87. In theory I prefer cotton, but in reality, I find other fabrics better at wicking away moisture. I would be interesting to know the environmental impact the manufacturing has of synthetic fabrics, maybe that would sway me completely to cotton?

  88. I’m yet to use a completely cotton diaper, but plan on doing so. My daughter’s bum has proven to be very sensitive, and I want to “experiment” using natural fabrics by her skin; although I am a bit concerned over whether she’ll stay dry enough (as she has had a very stubborn yeast rash that we’re trying to get rid of, particularly overnight.

  89. I prefer organic cotton. I haven’t had my son yet, but anything synthetic makes me very red and itchy so I am assuming he will be the same way. Also I feel better using organic items.

  91. I think organic ones are the best diapers to use. Safe for soft skin.

  92. I for sure prefer cotton over synthetic fibers! My little ones sensitive skin agrees. I can’t keep him in synthetic for too long or he gets rashy, just like in a disposable. But in cotton he does just fine. :) And when I buy organic, I feel better about the choice I’m making for the Earth!

  93. I don’t use cloth so I don’t know what I would like better. Maybe if I win I will switch to cloth diapers. Cotton is more natural though.

  94. I like both for different reasons. For times when the diaper will be left on a little longer, I really like synthetic suedecloth because it wicks the moisture away.

On the other hand, cotton is nice because it doesn’t tend to get stinky over time like the synthetics do.

  95. Do I prefer cotton or synthetic materials? Honestly I would use either one. I’m new to cloth diapering and feel that since I am doing such a good thing in regards to the environment and our family the exact fabric isn’t of total importance. But I do feel cotton is the most natural and would most likely pick that if I had the choice.

  96. each have pros and cons. i love my dream-eze OCF because they are trim, absorb so much and are really soft. my CPF never leak but are a bit bulky. and my FB dry super fast and pull moisture away from baby making them a great out and about/over night dipe. each have a certain quality i love and cant live without.

  97. I prefer synthetic (microfleece) because it wicks moisture away from baby. We’re potty training during the day now so cotton is great to help my son know he’s wet!

  98. I prefer cotton over synthetic as it is a natural fiber and not man-made. It’s as simple as that :-).
