My top priority was split two ways when buying my diapers. Cost and effectiveness both tie for the number one things I look for. I want my diaper to be as cheap as possible, but I am not willing to sacrifice effectiveness for a cheap diaper, either. This is why I mainly use flats!:)

When I picked diapers for my daughter, I was looking for ones that (a) wouldn’t leak and (b) would grow with her. We’re on our 20th month with our Bum Genius diapers from Diaper Junction (formerly ???), and they’ve held up very well. I’ll have to bolster my stash to accomodate my son, due to arrive in September!

When I purchase CD I first look for it to be something convenient for me to use – having to “figure it out” every time I put it on is not going to work for me. I look for use (as in how long can I use it/will I be able to re-use it), features that make it easy to clean, care for, or put on, and after some experience, features that make it hard for a baby–make that, toddler to take off. One really unique one is an Otter Blotters AI2. It can be used as a pocket or an AI2(change out inserts), and it fastens with velcro to get good adjustment, but it also has snaps that cover the velcro, so ‘baby’ can’t get it off. It also has an insert that turns itself inside out in the wash so it has a shorter dry time.

When I am looking for cloth diapers, I am looking at cost, does it work well and is it easy for daddy and everyone to use!
I look for longevity, functionality, and user-friendliness. I initially also considered cost because my husband is a miser, but after he kept complaining and refusing to change the Thirsties, we went with BumGenius and GroBaby and we’re totally happy with our decision, despite the higher cost. I *like* the prettier covers of the GroBaby, but I figured they’re going to be covered by clothes and even a solid color is cuter than most any disposable, so I kind of gave up one cute diapers.

I look for how easy it is to change the baby’s diaper. My wife asks me about all of our diapers and tries to include me when she is buying them. My favorite is our Grobaby diapers because the snap in liners are so convenient. Our little girl is very wiggly so these diapers are a breeze. So I guess my answer would be convenience.

I look for a good quality diaper that will hold up for a long time. I would like to use them for as many children as possible, so that’s years of use. Snaps over velcro, definitely.
Cute styles/patterns/colors are just a bonus, but it’s not something that I would focus on.

When selecting a brand, I look for fit and sizing. My baby is slender and tiny, and many of the popular brands (like BG) just don’t fit her very well. It was also frustrating to try OS diapers that fit babies “from 10lbs+” and they didn’t fit MY baby until she was over 15 lbs (and several months old).
I look at reviews, cost, and style!

I look for comfort, fit, cost and longevity. I want baby to feel comfortable in them and that they will last for many years. I do not want them being scratched by velcro on accident or have red marks on their legs. I also do not want to be buying new diapers every 6 months, at the same time, I want a good price – I live on pinching pennies!! So far the Gro Baby’s are crossed off my list for red marks and too much time to dry the soakers, and the flips and econobums are what I use now.
