Going Coverless

Going Coverless

If you often frequent cloth diapering or natural parenting forums, you may have heard this term quite a bit. So what is going coverless? Going coverless is when you have your baby in fitted diapers or prefold diapers without any sort of diaper covers.

It may sound like a strange idea, but there are actually benefits for your child to go coverless. I have heard many a mama ask questions about how to do it and thought I could help answer some of those questions for you.

How do you go coverless?

Easy! Just put on a good absorbent fitted, prefold, flat or prefitted (any diaper that requires a cover) and let your baby do her thing.

Why go coverless?

There are a few benefits to letting your baby go coverless. For one, it helps keep them cooler in the hot summer months.

Next, it helps the flow of air circulation, allowing his delicate skin to breathe; this is great if your baby is prone to diaper rash.

And lastly, going coverless is a great way to know right away when your little one needs his cloth diapers to be changed.

Isn’t it messy?

Going coverless can have its occasional messes, yes. You just have to be a little more attentive. For instance, before you pick your baby up, check the diaper to make sure it’s not wet. Otherwise, you will be wet too.

If you have good and absorbent fitted diapers, and keep an eye on their diapers for wetness, you should be OK.

When is it a good time to go coverless?

Summer is a perfect time for going coverless, and so is any other time when it is warm enough. In the fall and spring, you can always use some baby legwarmers to help keep your little one’s legs warm. Playing outside or running around the house are also great times for going coverless.

How old does my baby have to be to go coverless?

Any age baby can go coverless. If your baby is still young, you can lay a fleece blanket underneath them as they are coverless. Older babies and toddlers who are always on the go won’t be in one place long enough to worry about wet diapers leaving a spot.

All in all, going coverless can have alot of advantages. Just make sure your baby always has absorbent cloth diapers on, change your baby often, and keep a fleece blanket on hand for your baby to sit or lay on.

I’ve never heard of that! I remember that sometimes my mom would run out of covers for one reason or another so my siblings would be coverless but it was always messy.

My baby went coverless from the moment she was born. She has a rare skin condition that made it very painful for her to have covers on so we use only prefolds at home! All of our family members know that if they are going to pick her up, she’s probably a little wet. In the beginning she traveled with a fleece blanket everywhere, so when someone held her for a while their clothes wouldn’t be soiled. As for clothes, well, she doesn’t wear pants that often! I just took all the onesies I had purchased for her and cut them off. You can read more about her, and her skin condition on our blog.

Another great alternative is a fleece or wool cover.

Great tip to try. My new baby will be born in June and I think a few coverless hours will be good for him. Thanks for the advice :)
