cloth diaper blog. the all in one cloth diaper resource

“I made a difference to that one!”

January 26th, 2007

Disposable diapers represent 305 of non-biodegradable waste. When it comes to making smarter decisions for our Earth, cloth diapering ranks high. Disposable diapers are the 3rd largest single consumer item in landfills, and represent 30% of non-biodegradable waste. No small beans.

In early January, one of the feature stories at Lagniappe Mobile Online” was written about Sallye Irvine, a zealous earth-conscious activist in her community. She speaks out for the reduction of consumables that cannot be recycled. Not surprisingly, she is a cloth diaper advocate.

“People have those diaper genies, and they put diapers in them and terminally seal up these sausage links of diapers, which won’t biodegrade for millions of years, not to mention I’ve probably saved enough money to put one of my children through college by using cloth diapers.”

I particularly liked her response when her husband told her she coudn’t change the earth all by herself. She said, “…it’s like the story about the man walking on the beach. There are all these washed up starfish on the beach, and everybody says, ‘You can’t save them all,’ but he throws one back and says, ‘I made a difference to that one.’”

I agree with Irvine: “If everybody did their own little part, it would have a dramatic impact.”
