All right all you cloth diapering mamas, I have a question for you: “What is the most common piece of garbage that gets washed up on the beach?” Got it yet? Well, the answer is, not so surprisingly, plastic tampon applicators.
I’ll give a minute for the chorus of “ewww” to die down.
Now that you have that little piece of information I’d like to pose a suggestion: “Why don’t you use cloth too?”
I know, I know, you’re all thinking “cloth menstrual pads?! NO WAY!” But how many of you were faced with similar thinking when considering cloth diapers? Let me put it this way, we already cloth diaper, don’t you think we deserve the comfort of cloth for ourselves?
The great thing about alternative menstrual care products is the variety available; there truly is a product for everyone.
Concerned about using only organic? Imse Vimse Cloth Menstrual Pads are made from all-natural, 100% organic cotton flannelette. Want the comfort and dryness of fleece? The Happy Heiny’s Mama Cloth Pads are sewn from luxuriously soft, custom milled fleece. Want cute and fun? LunaPads come in a variety of fun fabrics!
There’s even the Diva Cup, an alternative to tampons. Less tampons sold means less applicators floating around in the ocean and washing up in your sandcastle.
Worried about washing cloth pads?
If you cloth diaper, you already know how to care for cloth pads! You can wash your cloth diapers and menstrual care products together! Or, if you’d prefer, launder your cloth menstrual pads with a load of towels or sheets. In my near two years of using them, I’ve never had an issue with odor or stain transfer in my laundry.
Here’s another point to consider. We are women. We have periods. It’s a fact of life. We should embrace and accept it as one of the many unique facets of womanhood. I hope I’ve opened your eyes a little bit to what is often an overlooked and underappreciated item. We did it for our kids, now let’s do it for ourselves. Ditch the ‘sposies!

I agree! I just stated using cloth after I had my baby 9 months ago–for postpartum use. I hated pads and couldn’t use tampons as well as wanting to be more eco-conscious and healthy. I bought some bamboo ones and now that my flo is returning (I’m nursing) now, I bought some organic bamboo and wool ones from Etsy. People–try it out! Cloth feels so much better!
I have been using cloth diapers for about 2 full months now and i love it! I havent even thought of using cloth for myself due to my recent pregnancy with baby #2 due in august. But this is going to be my next adventure in the world of cloth and helping the earth and im very excited about it.
Surprisingly, it only occured to me recently when my cycle came back to start using eco-friendly menstrual options. It only makes sense, seeing as I’ve cloth diapered my daughter since she was born, I ought not add to the landfills either. The Diva Cup is my preferred method. Silly question: does anyone wash their menstrual products with the baby’s diapers?
I’ve been using cloth menstrual pads for six months now and have never looked back. They are so much more comfortable than disposables, and just as easy to care for as the cloth diapers I put on my son.
Tawnya – I do wash my cloth with the diapers. I rinse it off first and store them in a small wetbag. I then wash them with my cloth diapers without a problem.
I have just started cloth diapers on my two year old. I wish i would have started sooner. I love it.
I’ve also just started cloth diapering my 21 month old, and am pregnant with number two due in July. I am very glad I made this decision, I have only one regret…I wish I would have started sooner! lol
Wow! It’s great to see such a vast discussion!
Tawnya, I was my cloth pads with my kiddo’s diapers. I too keep them in their own wetbag and then just add them to the load. I want to try out the Diva Cup soon. I’ve heard amazing things about them.
We’ve been doing cloth diapers for 3 months already. And I just started using mama cloth pads. I even made a little post about it on my blog. And it’s true, my reaction was the same as with the diapers….EWWW! But I looked at it a different way and here I am. Changing to cloth little by little.
I have a menstrual cup called “the keeper”. It is similar to the Diva Cup and I love it. I didn’t know about the Diva Cup when I bought my Keeper and have heard great things about the DC. I strongly recommend the menstrual cups as there is no water waste, no washing, and it is small and you can just carry it with you. When you are in a public restroom, I do recommend using the handicap stall as most of them have sinks in them nowadays and it makes it way easier to rinse the cup if you need to empty it while out and about.
By the way…by no washing in my earlier post, I meant laundry…haha. You do have to wash it for obvious reasons. :)
