After the birth and delivery of my daughter, I became more sensitive to feminine products. Tampons were no longer comfortable and pads were just plain irritating. When searching for alternatives I came upon the Diva Cup. It took some time before I finally gave it a try, but since then I have not looked back.
Because I chose to cloth diaper my child, using disposable feminine products for myself made me feel like a hypocrite. The Diva Cup seemed like a good fit for my more natural lifestyle choices. Not only is it is reusable, but it easily travels concealed in my purse or pocket.
For me, the Diva Cup is far more comfortable than any tampon product I have ever used. Made from a soft surgical plastic that easily contours to a woman’s body, the cup comes in two sizes (sizes are based on your age and if you have given birth).
Moment of honesty-insertion takes getting accustomed to, but after a few practice runs (preferably in the comfort of your own home) I found the technique that worked best for me. Once inserted correctly, it is nice to have little worry about embarrassing leaks or odors.
Unlike tampons, the Diva Cup is safely worn for as long as 12 hours without removal. To me, this is one of the cups biggest advantages. Please see the Diva Cup website for several worthwhile FAQs regarding the cup and its care.
The only downside I can foresee is not being able to use the cup immediately postpartum if I have another child. There are some great postpartum care kits, but the Diva Cup is just so comfortable.
I have now used the Diva Cup for over a year without any troubles, except maybe forgetting to have it with me! It also brings me comfort to know that I am making a lesser impact on the environment with each one of my cycles.

I also use this product and absolutely love it! It did take a cycle for me to get the hang of the insertion so I wouldn’t have leaks. I think it’s a shame that more women don’t know about this, thank you for spreading the word!
I have one of these too and it’s awesome! I had to use the turn-it-inside-out trick in order for it to work for me, but since I did, it’s fantastic.
There are tons of brands of menstrual cups out there, so if you don’t think this one would work for you, there are many more to choose from!
I started using it a few years ago and ended up getting a bad yeast infection becuase I was cleaning it with harsh rubbing alcohol. Then I got a new one when I had my son and after almost 2 years of super gentle care the same thing started to happen. Maybe they just don’t last as long as they claim…. I don’t know if I will try it again or not. I’m in love with the cup and I have had happy periods ever since I was introduced to the Diva cup…. I just really hate infections.
But a note on what Jessica said about turning it inside out…. that is a great tip I hadn’t heard yet. Sounds like it would keep that little nub from pinching. I cut that thing off as far as I could.
To Tiffany (9/8/2009) –
Have you tried using the Diva Wash with your Diva Cup? I purchased the 2 together and have been trouble free (and am prone to VYI’s myself).
I also wash my hands 3 times – once before removing the cup, once before insertion & then again after insertion. Perhaps if you use the Diva Wash to clean the cup & your hands it might help to prevent the dreaded VYI? Am unsure from your post if you’ve tried this. Another idea for cleaning may be to place the cup (per manufacturer’s instructions) in hot or boiling water between cycles?

I made the switch after cloth diapering my daughter and thinking why not give cloth pads and the diva cup a try and I LOVE it! It is so nice not to worry about carrying tampons or pads and once you get the hang of it it is very easy to use.
I recently bought a Diva Cup and I have used it for my last 3 cycles. I love it! I’m trying to talk my friends into buying one too, but they think I’m nuts!
Thanks for the great post on The DivaCup and making your audience aware of this sensational alternative to tampons and pads.
I want to make sure your readers know our cup is made with healthcare grade silicone so it has no plastics or BPA’s.
Thanks again!

I am interested in trying a DivaCup. I’ve tried Instead before, but still felt unsure about total protection. Plus, I found Instead to be kind of difficult to remove without making a mess(gross I know!). DivaCup looks like it holds more liquid so perhaps it is better. If anyone has can respond to my thoughts that would be great.
I am pregnant now, but I had been using my Diva Cup for over a year and it changed my life! I no longer had to worry about icky tampons, and it is so much better for the environment. It does take some getting used to. Took me about a month or two to get the hang of it, but once I did, I will never go back! I bought the Diva Wash and use it to clean it with hot water. I have never had a problem. I would encourage anyone who is thinking about getting one to take the plunge!
