Pampers Investigated by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission

Pampers is under investigation by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission following reports from parents of serious diaper rashes, blisters and possible chemical burns.

The official statement by Proctor & Gamble spokesman, Bryan McCleary, was “There’s no evidence that a single baby has experienced a serious skin safety issue as a result of Dry Max.” Dry Max Technology is used in Pampers new Swaddlers and Cruisers diapers.

The company also responded with another statement that these claims are “completely false” citing they have received “less than two complaints about diaper rash for every one million Pampers diapers sold.”

The Facebook Group, Pampers bring back the OLD CRUISERS/SWADDLERS report otherwise. With over 5000 members, the mission of the group is to “Aggressively pursue a change from the company Proctor & Gamble in relation to their product line of Pampers Cruisers/Swaddlers with Dry Max.” Parents are sharing their personal experiences and photos of bad rashes from Pampers on the group’s forum.

Of course, our personal stance is to avoid disposable diapers altgoether. There are no worries over the possibility of chemical burns and/or extensive diaper rashes when using cloth diapers.

  1. Wow!!! So glad I started using cloth diapers from birth, and my little girl has NEVER had a rash! Hooray for cloth diapers, and maybe this will get the attention of a few disposable diapering moms!

  2. Michelle says:

I cloth diapered, and my son had a constant yeast infection. None of these blogs helped me. I stripped them over and over again, washed them exactly as I was supposed to, and he would get awful, bloody rashes. He has been in disposables (not pampers) for over a year, and has never had a rash.

I know many people who have had the same issues with Cloth.

So to say there are no worries over extensive diaper rash isn’t exactly true, if you factor in yeast infections.

  3. The post said “no worries over chemical burns” – that is a little different that a rash, or a yeast infection. I know that there is a solution perfect for 100% of the people. Some need to use cloth, some need to use dispoable. But overall, as a general statement, cloth diapered babies have fewer rash troubles.

    Here was the exact quote:

“There are no worries over the possibility of chemical burns and/or extensive diaper rashes when using cloth diapers.”

This statement from the article includes “extensive diaper rashes,” which a yeast infection would fall under the category of.

I spent a lot of money on Cloth, only to fail. I have heard story after story from mom’s who’s kids had TERRIBLE yeast rash’s from cloth. So I think giving a blanket statement that cloth diapered babies have fewer rashes than disposable diapered babies is false.

  5. Valerie says:

As the mom of a baby affected by Pampers DryMax, I have to say that cloth has been our saving grace. Maybe I read the article a little differently having experienced one of these nasty DryMax rashes first hand, but I know that cloth will not hurt my son the way that disposable diaper did. My husband and I are fully committed to cloth now, and are excited about the cost savings, too. We will be cloth diapering any future children, too.

  6. Jana says:

My eldest was sensitive to Huggies and had horrible horrible rashes on her hips until I identified the problem and got her out of them. They’re all different and sensitive to different things, but I can definitely say that, for us, our kids have never had a rash of any kind in cloth, whereas we had a whole gamut of them with disposables.

  7. Holly Wilson says:

This is exactly why I ordered my first cloth diapers last week Can’t wait till they get here!

  8. Erica says:

We tried the Dry Max diapers & they were awful!!! They LEAKED AND they have my daughter a raw rash along the gusset/stretchy leg openings…. it was horrible!! We use cloth, minus an overnight sposie & I just wish I could find cloth to keep my all night nursling comfy… I have since switched to Target sposies for overnight & they seem more durable than Pampers & Huggies w/out the price tag… I HATE Huggies… & the Pampers sag horribly on my DD’s long torso. If she wears a size 3 she poops & pees out of them, but a 4 is too big… cloth is just right, if only it last all night :0).

I called Pampers & complained about the dry max leaking, seams falling apart, & the gel pellets coming out, which they ensured me was 100& safe, of course… anyway, the woman told me how they have the wonderful “lotion” in their diapers & it coats the baby’s skin… I asked her for the ingredients & they were petroleum, etc. I told her I was opposed to using an extra petroleum lotion in the diapers & not making that clear… not sure if that is what ate my baby’s skin or the gussets. In any case, I am DONE w/Pampers for GOOD now…Huggies too, although I did like their “natural” diapers or organic or whatever they claim they are… but they don’t last overnight.

  9. Helen says:

We have had rashes in both. It started as redness in cloth and I couldn’t get it to go away despite multiple changes, etc. Switched to disposables and put on lots of otc cream and it still took 7 days to go away.

I talked to the doctor and they prescribed niacin cream and airing out as much as possible. worked for us. As soon as it was cleared up we went back to cloth and thankfully haven’t had it come back.

If your baby has a yeast/thrush infection ask your doctor about prescribing niacin cream. It really helps. Niacin is the same ingredient prescribed when we had a thursh infection in the mouth and breast.
