Potty training is such a bittersweet time. On one hand, you are “oh so close” to eliminating diaper changes (yea!). On the other hand, it is one more step your little one is taking away from you.
Right now, we are attempting to potty train our almost two year old. So far, she is doing really well. She tells us when she has to go, and she gets so excited when she makes it to the potty on time. You would think Elmo himself hung out in our bathroom for how excited she gets!
Still, we haven’t been without our trials. Let me tell you, it is NO FUN rolling-down poopy training pants.
Yuck.
And some days she flat out refuses to go anywhere near the bathroom door! Obviously, potty training has its steps forward and back, but luckily, most of ours have been forward.
There are so many methods and devices out there to choose from when potty training; you are bound to find one that works for you. We call our method the “turtle method”. Why turtle? Because we decided to take potty training “slow and steady” and not push her too hard. In fact, for the most part, this has been a mainly “toddler lead” affair.
We let her decide when it is time to use the potty. I have personally seen the effects of parents who try to start too early and force their kids to potty learn before the child is on board. In my opinion, this is never the way to proceed and can lead to a lot of undue trauma.
Potty training should be fun, and okay, a little funny too! When we gave our daughter her first pack of “big girl panties” she was so in love with them she decided to put them on right then and there.
All six pair.
What are some of your funny Potty training stories?

We practiced the turtle method at our house too. Our daughter finally made the switch the day before her third birthday. She was one of the last of her friends to train, but she also never has accidents, which isn’t the case with many of her earlier-training friends.
I really thought the book “Diaper Free Before 3″ was a great approach. It is parent-led, but not so crazy as some of these “potty parties” I’ve been hearing about. We’ve been exposing our our (just turned) 2 year old to the potty since she was about 14 months old. She started going in the potty on rare occasions around 18 months, and now she pees in the potty all the time during the day. Naptimes, night time, and “number 2″ are still in the learning stage, but I really like being down to 2 diapers per day!
I read online about infant potty training and I decided to give it a try with my 4 month old. For a few days I would make a pssst or fart sound whenever she went. Then I started putting her on the potty ($12 baby bjorn potty) and making the noises when she woke up or after feeding. I was super surprised when she would concentrate and then go pee and/or poop. She is now 6 months old and 90% of all poop goes in the potty! It is so great and makes cloth diapering super easy. I was surprised at how easy it was to do this “elimination communication.” Other moms that do it say they only have their babes in diapers at night by 9 months to a year!!!!
I happend to land on your blog. Wow thanks for the information everyone. I had to forward this to my sister. She is trying to potty train her 2 year old right now and the 2 year old is making it difficult. Thanks.
