It’s that time again! Time to hose off the kiddie pools and come back to the outside world! Summertime is my favorite season.
I just love homemade freezer pops, the smell of sunblock and of course, a cute little tushie in a swim diaper!
There is a lot of confusion about the purpose of swim diapers. Some people believe a swim diaper should be absorbent and keep pee from entering into communal water, but neither disposable swim diapers or cloth swim diapers are designed for absorbency.
An absorbent swim diaper would serve as a danger to our little ones because children are simply not strong enough to keep afloat with the weight of a fully absorbent swim diaper pulling them down.
The primary function of a swim diaper, other than looking plain adorable, is to contain solids (or as many of us mothers call it - “number 2’s”). Anyone who has experience “shocking” pool water knows what a blessing the barrier of a swim diaper can be.
I really like the Imse Vimse Swim Diaper. It’s very form fitting and comes in a range of cute prints and colors. If I was a fan of velcro-style closures, the Bummis Swim Diaper would meet my needs nicely - it works similarly to a diaper cover.
A swim diaper usually costs less than fifteen dollars and unlike disposable, single-use swim diapers, a cloth swim diaper will last ALL SUMMER. There is no need to spend countless dollars on packages of paper diapers you will have to toss after each fun filled day at the pool or beach. Swim diapers can be thrown into the washing machine and dryer with bathing suits, towels, or other cloth diapers!
Enjoy this season with reusable swim diapers - save money, contain messes, and most of all, HAVE FUN.

My 9-month-old daughter has been taking swim lessons for a few months now and we use Imse Vimse swim diapers for her. I also have a matching Imse Vimse top. They are incredibly effective… and cute!
I really need to get on ordering a cloth swim diaper. No way will I be spending all of that $$ on disposable ones! I’ve heard great things about the Imse Vimse and can’t wait to try it!
I have the One Step Ahead “adjustable” swim diapers (with velcro). They seem to work well (haven’t actually had a poop in them yet - and they have a tiny bit of absorbancy, to get you from the changing room to the pool (or from the house to the yard).
Best of all, with the adjustability, I know we will be able to use these all summer, and POSSIBLY even next year!
I purchased 2 iplay swim diapers for my little girl, and they are absolutely adorable and effective. We went to the over memorial day weekend and I got to try them out. They have minimal absorbancy, but they contain #2’s really well (because, of course, my child would poop the minute we walked on to the beach.) I ordered them from the perfectly safe website and they weren’t terrible costly!
I just use Bum Genius Pockets, unstuffed, for my daughters. I bought two white ones so they are different from all our other diapers and just keep them separate. I bought them used off Craigslist so they were cheap and in a pinch, I can stuff them and use them like a normal diaper.
