Adventures in Lactating: Cloth Nursing Pads!

becca-nursing-1

Nothing prepared me for what breastfeeding would be like. Absolutely nothing. I was told about the leaking, engorgement, and blistered nipples, but until I experienced it for myself, I had no way of understanding what those who’d gone before me were talking about. My Mom breastfed all seven of us and since I’m the oldest in our little clan, I was accustomed to seeing her whip out a boob regularly to satiate the hunger of my younger siblings. Because of my Mom’s example, it rarely, if … [Read more...]

Cloth Diapers: Never Give Up

I wanted to use cloth diapers for my son because I’m cheap. There it is. Sure, I like saving the environment, I wanted things to be healthier for The Burrito, blah blah blah. Really, I’m cheap, and the prospect of spending a little upfront for all my kids instead of thousands of dollars for each kid just appealed to my thriftiness. Since most of our initial diaper stash was gifts, we had a pretty reasonable upfront investment. In terms of using the diapers, though, things kept standing in my … [Read more...]

Embarking on a New Adventure: Solid Foods

cloth diapers are perfect for just hanging out and enjoying a snack.

I have to say, cloth diapering my newborn was a really easy thing. I used to change her diapers by taking the dirty diaper and the cloth baby wipe and throwing them both, as they were, in the wetbag; waste and all. Yes, I did breastfeed exclusively and the waste that comes from an exclusively breastfed baby is water soluable. I was spoiled and not even aware of it. I had heard that solid waste, "just rolls off the cloth diaper." Well, let me tell you… My experience with starting solid foods … [Read more...]

One Lifestyle Doesn’t Fit All

I have a confession to make. When I was nursing my firstborn, I really disapproved of anyone using formula. I couldn't understand why any mother wouldn't do whatever it took to make sure their child received all the health benefits of breastmilk. It wasn't like I was openly judging anybody, but in my mind, I probably did. That's just as wrong. But as I've grown as a parent, I've met all sorts of moms. And a lot of good moms did not breastfeed their children. Some of them didn't have family … [Read more...]

Lessons to Recycle

Becca G's committement to eco-concious cloth diapering started from day one.

When I was born, all the mothers in our neighborhood used formula. That's because their doctors told them it was best for their babies. But my mom was a bit of a rebel. The youngest daughter of a large family, she was raised during the Great Depression - a time when nothing went to waste. My grandmother nursed her like all the other mothers in their Napa Valley neighborhood. So when my mother had her first child during the 1950s, she shocked all her friends who were sold on the ease and … [Read more...]
