Giving Cloth Diapers to New Parents: Ask or Don’t Ask?

cloth diapers gift 1

Since I love using cloth diapers so much, and since (to me) it seems like an obvious choice when it comes to baby care, it's only natural that I want to give them to friends of mine who are expecting, or who have children in diapers. Maybe part of my reasons for giving cloth diapers away is because I no longer really need any more, so it's a way for me to feed into my little "diaper obsession". Mostly, it's because I just love sharing anything I can that will make taking care of a baby easier … [Read more...]

Here Comes the Sun (Doo Doo Doo Doo)

cloth diapers dry nicely on a clothesline...as long as your neighborhood association doesn't make you take it down.

... and I said, IT'S ALRIGHT! In fact, it's the best thing ever for getting "doo doo" stains out of your beloved cloth diapers. Due to the bleaching effects of the sun, when paired with ample oxygen provided from all of Mother Nature's goodness... a few hours outside on the laundry line will make your diapers as white as the day you bought them! When I first began my journey into cloth diapering, I though that line drying was a tad on the bit of the way too "crunchy" side of things for me, … [Read more...]

Embarking on a New Adventure: Solid Foods

cloth diapers are perfect for just hanging out and enjoying a snack.

I have to say, cloth diapering my newborn was a really easy thing. I used to change her diapers by taking the dirty diaper and the cloth baby wipe and throwing them both, as they were, in the wetbag; waste and all. Yes, I did breastfeed exclusively and the waste that comes from an exclusively breastfed baby is water soluable. I was spoiled and not even aware of it. I had heard that solid waste, "just rolls off the cloth diaper." Well, let me tell you… My experience with starting solid foods … [Read more...]

I Love Changing Diapers

The joys of changing cloth diapers

You may think I’m crazy, but I love changing diapers.  I love being able to choose a bright colored pocket diaper that matches my daughter’s dress.  I love being able to put soft, cotton prefolds against her gentle skin.  And when the weather is cold and my daughter’s skin needs the warmest protection, I love nothing more than using a warm pair of wool longies over a fitted diaper. Crazy, maybe, but to me, changing diapers is just about as cool as choosing an adorable outfit for … [Read more...]

Diapers, Dolls and Daydreams

babyalive

My first doll was Baby Alive. Back in the early 1970s, she had messy blonde hair and a little pink mouth that you could dribble cereal into. Best of all, she would pee and poop. I remember the first time I fed her. So does my brother, because it was in his room. All over the bright blue shag carpet. What a mess. I had him keep guard at the door so I could secretly scrub up the cereal goop because we weren't supposed to be getting milk out of the refrigerator unsupervised. I didn't even … [Read more...]

Vacation Diaries: Poop on the Road

Since we bought a diaper sprayer, poopy diapers have been a non-issue in our house. It is a convenience necessity we just don't think about, and definitely can't live without, much like the toilet to which it is attached. When we go on vacation, using cloth diapers is the only choice for us. Vacations can be expensive enough as it is without the added cost of a couple of boxes of disposable diapers. But what about the poop? What do you do with the poop when you're on vacation and … [Read more...]

My husband doesn’t want to use cloth diapers.

Many moms want to try cloth diapers, but are fearful of what "dear old dad" might think of the idea. I often hear, "I want to use cloth diapers, but I don't think he'll go for it. I sure don't want to get stuck with all the diaper changes." In diapering, as in life, good communication and partnership is the formula to success. Instead of resigning to full-time diaper duty, consider these tips and discussion points when bringing up the issue with Dad: DISPOSAL. Cloth diapers are not … [Read more...]
