“This is totally old-school”…

cloth diaper

Debbie Arrington of the Sacramento Bee reported on cloth diapers today in the article, Book of Dreams: Changing to cloth diapers means big savings. She starts off her post with a common sense statement I love, “A small change often can create a big difference.” Isn’t that the truth?!

Arrington quotes Lorena Carranza, Mother-Baby Program Manager at the Oak Park Family Service Center, as saying “Our goal is to help families save money…Paper diapers may be easier, but you’re just throwing money in the garbage. That’s why this issue is crucial.”

Mireya Estrella, the Mother-Baby Program Manager at Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services’ North Sacremento Center, teaches cloth diaper classes to mothers at the Rio Linda Boulevard facility; how to use them, how to find materials to sew them, and even how to sew them.

With the goal in mind to “…help families save money”, Carranza and Estrella know when a mom is struggling to put food on the table, even small savings of 31 cents a diaper adds up.

Arrington reports the “two Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services centers see about 500 families monthly, including more than 500 diaper-wearing babies and toddlers.”

There is a need for 260 cloth diapers, cloth diaper covers, and 520 cloth diaper fasteners. If you live in Sacramento contact either of these facilities or The Sacramento Bee for more information.
