What’s In Tiffany’s Diaper Bag?

What's In Tiffany's Diaper Bag?

For parents who are new to cloth diapering, it can be difficult to determine what you may need in your diaper bag.

I compiled a list of items I consistently keep in my daughter’s diaper bag for local outings below. Keep in mind, my daughter is almost two years old, so if you use this list as a guide, you may need to carry additional items for an infant (like burping cloths, bibs, non-dried foods, etc).

What’s in my Diaper Bag?

  • Travel wipes
  • Bumkins tote bag w/ mesh net on outside
  • 2 to 5 cloth diapers, depending on how long we’ll be gone
  • Extra diaper cover, just in case
  • Burt’s Bees Diaper Ointment (Okay to use with cloth diapers in my experience.)
  • Reusable changing pad
  • Change of clothes - more for dirt/food reasons than for diaper reasons
  • Snacks:
    • Trader Joe’s Dried Fruit Bars
    • Trader Joe’s Dried Fruit Bars
    • Nature’s Best Cereal Bars
    • Dried Apricots

The Burt’s Bees diaper ointment rarely needs to be used, but we like to have it on hand just in case; check your diaper manufacturer’s recommendations before using to be certain. We have cloth diapered for almost two years and have not had any problems with it washing off of the diapers.

When traveling by road…

When traveling by road, we carry most of our diapers & covers. If we plan to stay overnight where we can wash diapers, we also bring:

  • Charlie’s Soap
  • A bottle of BacOut by BioKleen (for soiled diapers only)
  • White Vinegar (we add this to the rinse cycle)
  • Box of wipes
  • Two Bummis tote bags (one to hold diapers before the wash, then one that is dry and ready to use while the previous bag is being washed/dried)

When we stay in hotels or travel by air, we reluctantly use disposables as they take up less room in our luggage. There are also fewer space-occupying accessories with disposables, such as diaper detergent, BacOut, etc. We end up packing more clothes for everyone, as we often experience diaper leaks with disposables we would not experience with cloth. I am also afraid of our cloth diapers getting lost, so I prefer to carry disposables when traveling by air.

Hopefully you have found these lists helpful! What’s in YOUR diaper bag for local outings or when traveling?

  1. In my diaper bag I keep:
    1) a spare gDiaper cover,
    2) two (CLOTH) inserts,
    3) some cloth wipes (when on the road, i just wet them with water to save bringing my wipe solution),
    4) teething toys and a board book
5)sunscreen (we live in Atlanta and are often in the sun!),
    6) Trader Joe’s O’s (their take on the “c” brand),

    and

    7) a spare outfit for Baby C if I can fit it (much easier in the summer!).

Sometimes I’ll throw in a baby spoon and a bib but you can’t count on that!

  2. I have a lot in there.
Extra diapers (I use my pocket diapers mostly because it’s just simpler)
    wet bag
changing pad that came with the diaper bag
    wipes
    baby orajel (she’s teething)
    bottle
    water
    formula
    extra onesie
    burp cloth
(If I bring solid food, which she is just learning about, I also bring that and a bib)
    camera
2 or 3 disposables for emergencies

I had to fly with my daughter recently, and also very reluctantly had to use disposables. I didn’t think about the diapers being lost–I’m so glad you said that–but we didn’t even buy our disposables til we got to our destination. I hated using them, and of course she got a diaper rash almost immediately. The next time I fly, I’m just going to bite the bullet and bring the cloth. Just not the expensive ones!

  4. I just got a bigger diaper bag and still, I had to leave the blanket out of it last time. I kept wanting to put more in, however I only really use a diaper bag for FULL day trips, like 12 hour trips, so its 9 or so pocket diapers, a fat slab of wipes (the bottom of a bag, I’ve never gotten by with the thin case), spare pacifier, blanket, changing pad, 2 changes for baby, toys, keys, cell, chapstick, debit card/license or wallet, and now that its summer we’ve added sunscreen. We also just got a wetbag after almost 8 months, so that goes in too. I also keep a spare pair of baggy pants in the back floorboard of our truck in case of leaks. Lesson learned. I also keep a spare ’sposie and flat case of wipes in the truck because we don’t do a diaper bag except for our long trips so if we go to the store, I go sans equipment. I only take tylenol if I’m not sure I can get to somewhere that sells it ASAP. Oh and if we plan on being somewhere late, then I stick pjs in the bag as well, and on her last few diaper changes, just change her into them so we have less to do at home. I took her vitamins last time too. And if its that time of the month I do add my own supplies in. No wonder my bag is already too full. We’re starting baby led solids so the food would typically go separate but I might stick a washcloth or bib in as well.

  5. I used to carry way too much, until I just *had to have* a Zosephine diaper bag, which is a little smaller than others. Now I have a system where I keep only the absolute essentials in the diaper bag, and another bag with backup stuff in the car. Then I carry around just what I need, but never worry about missing anything because I can just run out and get it! Works for me, and I’m relieved to carry a lighter bag :)

  6. I use a backpack purse. For short outings I put one cover and two diapers in the purse with a zipper bag of wipes (wallet size PUL) and a small tote size one. An extra shirt and shorts. Toddler silverware and a sippy cup. For longer outings I may bring two covers and additional diapers.
